TRENTHAM CANDIDATES.

NOTES FBOM MATAMATA.

VALPEEN AND PRINCE VAL,

It has been decided that, providing the weights suit, Valpcen's next start will be at the Wellington winter meeting next montli. Valpcen is in great heart, . and looks even improved since his racing at .Ellerslie. J • < Another pair from Matamata. who will be nominated for Wellington are Prinee Val and Royal Dance. The latter is a maiden three-year-old by Speardance from a mare by Valkyrian—Lady Marble, and is thus stoutly bred. Ho has been in work for some months, and shows promise.

Hikutaia, who accomplished a surprise victory at the Waipa meeting, is the third of the imported Speardance progeny to win, the others being First Dance and Poi Dance. There have been few horses by Speardance raced, but several of those in this district show _ promise. Good judges are of the opinion that staying will be their forte.

R. J. Mateer intends bringing Street Dancer, Lapstone and Try Luck in in a few days, for preparation for spring racing. Lapstone will be schooled for hurdle events.

Lucess is in work again after a brief spell. Master Nor val, in the same ownership, has an injured fetlock, and is still spelling. The maiden Feramorz gelding in Matccr's stable is being given plenty of solid work with a view to racing at the Rotorua Hunt Club's meeting. This horse has demonstrated his ability to jump well in the show ring, but has not been schooled since brought to Matamata from the east coast. Brown Abbey, in the same ownership, is still being spelled.

It was anticipated that Woodful would be taken to Wellington, but his work is such that it does not seem aa if he would make the trip.
