PROPOSED HOSTEL.
DOWN-AND-OUT MISSION.
"There is definite need for a hostel to provide a home for three months during the winter for single men who are unlit for work and certified as such by a doctor, and for men not eligible for tho old age pension," said Mr. F. Williams, of tho Down-and-Out Mission, this morning. "These men," he said, "are on sustenance allowance and what they receive is inadequate for their support without some assistance from social organisations."
In commenting on tho opposition to his scheme by the Metropolitan Relief Committee, Mr. Williams said a bed and two meals a day could be provided for 7/ a week, to be paid from the men's sustenance allowance, leaving a balance of 3/. If the scheme were put into operation it would automatically remove the need for the men to apply to any social organisation for further assistance. The fact that the men paid 7/ a week removed any stigma of charity.
