AUCKLAND SLUMS.
REBUILDING SUGGESTION. WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED. A statement that thero were a'number of houses in Auckland which had f)cien condemned years ago but which were still in occupation was made by Mr. Julius Hogben at the annual meeting of the Auckland City Mission. Mr. Ilogben said that a rebuilding scheme would contribute to recovery from the present depressed conditions and would be a work of advantage to the city. If the authorities had the courage apparent in many of the unemployed and their wives they might be expected to follow England's example and to commence a policy of rebuilding the slum areas in the cities.
Archbishop Averill said he had appreciated the need of some such scheme since the epidemic of 1918. Ho had visited many houses in the worst part of Auckland, and realised that the city had some ! slums. Surely if they could only look at the unemployment question with a wider view they would see that it called for action. The increasing use of machinery would ensure that the unemployment problem would exist, perhaps in a lesser degree, for many years. If the people had sufficient vision they could surely devise some scheme that would do away with a lot of those slum buildings. Such a plan would appeal to the best in the people, would provide work for many of those who were at present unemployed, and would mean the beginning of better things in the city of Auckland.
