SAFETY DEVICE.

New Invention for Italian

Submarines.

SUCCESSFUL TESTS MADE.

LONDON, June 7. The Milan correspondent of "The Times" says the Italian Navy has successfully tested a "submarine lift" invented by Signor Rossini, to save the crew of a sunken submarine. The device consists of a strong steel cylinder with watertight doors and of high buoyancy, secured to the submarine by means of a steel cable. As this is paid out the cylinder rises to the surface. It can accommodate one man with sufficient air for an hour and when it reaches the surface can be recalled to the submarine, thus enabling the entire crew, with the exception of the man operating the winch, to reach the surface. The last man escapes by means of a special automatic device for releasing the lift independently of.the winch. Seventy-five men were brought to the surface during tests conducted under most unfavourable conditions. An" average of eight minutes was employed in rescuing each.

The apparatus can be employed also to take supplies and tools to a submerged vessel. Five men entered a submerged submarine during the tests.
