It is likely tlmt a large number of Auckland motorists who did not have new registration number plains affixed to their cars by the appointed time will hear more of the neglect of their duty. Yesterday, it is understood, the police obtained the names of over sixty owners whose curs-still carried last year's registrations, and to day more additions were made to the list. "

It was pointed out in the Press two weeks ago that tiie owner of any motor vehicle wjiieh appeared on the roads after midnight on May 31 without 1954- :!.") registration plates would he liable to prosecution. Any owner who drives his ear without the new plates is committing a breach of both the .Motor Vehicles Act and the Motor Vehicles Third Parly Insurance Act, and if such 11 person is involved in an accident and is sued for damages he himself is personally responsible, as he is not covered by the insurance company carrying his risk. As many owners would probably not be! in a position to pay heavy damages if they were awarded against them, the police arc making an early "round-up." An owner of a. motor vehicle which has not been re-registered is not liable for that fact alone. Sneh a vehicle can be kept in it* garage as long as the owner wishes, but as soon as it is taken into a public place the owner becomes liable to prosecution.
