GIFT OF £10,000.

PATRIOTIC CITIZEN.

ENTRANCES FOR DOMAIN

ANONYMOUS DONOR. "This is another of those generous patriotic acts of citizenship that have taken place from time to time and made Auckland so fortunate a city in many of its amenities, which could not possibly have been provided out of publicfunds," said the Mayor, Mr. CI. W. Hutchison, at last night's meeting of the Auckland City Council, when announcing that a citizen, who wished to remain anonymous, had offered a gift of £10,000 to the city to provide one or two appropriate entrances to the 'Domain, Park Road and Stanley Street having been mentioned.

"On the approval of the council the donor will immediately place in trust the- sum of £10,000 for the purpose mentioned," said fie Mayor, amidst applause. "His desire is that plans shall be prepared by his own architect, subject to the approval of the council in consultation witli the city engineer. In due course the designs will be submitted for approval, so that the scheme will be adopted in accordance with our wishes."

In moving that the offer be gratefully accepted and referred to the parks committee and that the council place on record its appreciation of the high sense of citizenship which prompted the offer, the Mayor said he hoped when the designs were approved, that the citizen who had been so generous would allow his name to be made public. The offer had come from a most responsible quarter, and there was no risk in the council tdopting the motion. He though th«s offer had been suggested by tho city engineer's "comprehensive plan" for the Domain, recently placed before the council.

Mr. Grey Campbell asked if it was necessary to erect arches.

The Mayor: Nothing has been outlined. It is entirely a matter for the donor's architect.

When the motion was carried there was a salvo of applause from the councillors.
