FRENCH CHAMPIONSHIPS. AUSTRALIANS IN DOUBLES. PARIS, May 31. At the French lawn tennis championships on Wednesday, in the third round of the men's doubles, Stefani and Taroni (Italy) defeated Legeay and Lesuer, 6—4, 3—6. 6—l, 6—l. In the quarter-finals Borotra and Brugnon (France) defeated Austin and Hare (England). 4—6, 7 —g, 6—4, 6—2; Turnbull and Qiiist (Australia) defeated Prenn and Hopman, 6—4, 6—3. 2—6, 7 —5; Crawford and McGrath (Australia) defeated Stefani and Taroni, 6—2, 6—o, 6—2. Menzel and Mecht defeated, Brugnon and Bernard, 6—2, 6—3, 3—6, 6—2. In the women's singles quarter-finals, Fraulein Auasem (Germany) defeated Miss K. Stammers (the English holder), 6—4, 6—2. Tn the women's doubles quarter-finals : Misses Mathieu and Ryan defeated Misses Dearmari and Lyle, B—lo, 6—3, 6—3. Tn the mixed doubles quarter-finals Quist and Miss Ryan defeated Puncee and Miss Couquerque, 5—7, 6—l, 6 —o; Cramm and Miss Horn 'scratched to Hughes and Miss Nuthall. Crawford and Miss Scriven defeated Brugnon and Miss Howard, 6 —4, 2 —6, 6—o. Both Australian men's pairs scored impressive victories in the doubles, Crawford and McGratli running through the Italians in record time. McGrath's backhand was functioning perfectly, and Crawford was in something like his real form. Except in the third set, when Hopman was particularly brilliant, Turnbull's fierce services and Quist's smashes dominated the match in which the pair were faced by Prenn and Ilopman. Prenn was obviously below form.' Crawford and Miss Scriven played brilliantly to defeat Brugnon and Miss Howard in the mixed doubles, losing only j one point in the last three games.
