UNEMPLOYMENT FUND

British Surplus May Permit Cut In Contributions. IDLENESS ON" THE WANE. (British Official Wireless.) RUGSY, May 2. Speaking in the House of Commons the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, said that with unemployment moving downwards as at present there was every prospect of the Unemployment Insurance Fund showing a substantial surplus after paying debt charge and after the restoration of the economy, cuts. Under the provisions of the Unemployment Bill the disposal of that surplus would not be in the hands of the Government, but of a statutory committee.

It would be within the power of the committee to recommend if it thought fit, that there should be a reduction in the contributions. It seemed to him clear there would be a surplus which would allow the committee to make some recommendation of the kind.
