VICTORIA LEAGUE.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

A year of excellent progress was reported at the annual meeting of the Victoria League whieli was held in the lounge of the Lyceum Club last evening. Sir Walter Stringer presided. The annual report stated that new members elected during the year totalled 140, and that the present membership was 1252, including 271 life members. The great event of the year was the restoration of Empire Day in the schools by the Government, and once again the league had the privilege of sending speakers into the schools of New Zealand. The usual Empire Day ceremony also took placo at the Queen Victoria statue in Albert Park, the president, Miss J. A. Mowbray, 0.8. E., laying a, wreath on the monument. In moving the adoption of the report /and balance-sheet, Sir Walter Stringer spoke of the wonderful work being done by the league and paid tribute to the work being carried out by the president, Miss Mowbray. Ho referred to the honour conferred upon her by Hie Majesty the King, and moved that a special record be made in this direction. In thanking the members for their whole-hearted support and the cheerful manner in which they assisted her, Miss Mowbray said that she was proud to think that she had fitted in and helped the Empire. She felt sure there were few societies who worked with such unity as did the Victoria League, i In outlining the details of the J'f® I members' fund, Miss Mowbray said that I the fund was started by Miss Holland and herself in 1012 with the subsenptions received from the life membeis. It was honed, by leaving the interest to accumulate, to rase £1000. the interest of which would be available for the expenses of the league. Many donations had been received from members, and she hoped that the £100 still needed would soon be available. The reports read by the various committees showed that a year of good work had been done. In detailing the activities of the sewing committee, Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane thanked all who had sent in clothing and materials. The circle had sent away over 1300 garments. The work of the ever ready committee was reported on by Mrs. U S Kickerby, who said that during the last 14 years this committee had collected over £2000 for organisations outside the Victoria League. She referred to the assistance given by the girls committee. Other reports were given by Mrs. A. A. Edger, representing the war "raves and Anzac committee; Miss M. Earl, convener for the junior correspondence branch; Miss Marjorie Cerutty, convener of the girls' committee; Miss Statham, lectures circle; and Mrs. Usher, who reported on the formation of the new dramatic circle, which had its | first reading in December. The election of officers resulted in Miss Mowbray being elected unopposed as president for a further term. Keesing; council, Messrs. W. Crowther, C. C. Chalmers, H. Goldie, W. A. Harrison, F. S. Townley Little, Mrs. R. A. Bodle, Mrs. Carr-Smith, Mrs. Hammond] Hyde, Mrs. Preston Chambers, Mrs. C. Heather, Mrs. C. R. Keeble, Mrs. C. Kissling, Mrs. W. Leatham, Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane, Mrs. H. H. Partridge, Mrs. L. S. Rickerby, Mrs. S. A. Stride, Mrs. H. Thompson, Mrs. H. W. Wilson, Dr. G. do Courcy, Miss Chapman, Miss E. Fenton, Miss M. Earl, Miss E. Kent, Miss E. Keesing, the Misses C. and F. Murray, Miss A. H. Slater, Miss E. Statham, Miss J. Tapper. Mr. N. A. Duthie and Mr. H. P. Richmond were elected hon. auditor and hon. solicitor respectively, and votes of thanks were accorded for their past services. A brief musical programme, arranged by Miss Kent, included the following items:—Songs, "The Lass with a Delicate Air," sung by Miss Sybil P*" l * lipps; "Lassie o' Mine," sung by Mr. Geoffrey Laird, and a humorous sketch entitled "He, She and the Poker," the parts being taken by Mr. Jack Parsons and Miss Yvonne Watson. Pavitt, ,hc Misses Turner and Miss E. Walker.
