SWIMMING.

THE METRIC TITLES.

dENTRE CARNIVAL TO-NIGHT.

NINE N.Z.. CHAMPIONS COMPETE

For the Auckland Swimming Centre's first metric championship carnival to-night at the Tepid Baths, no less than nine New Zealand champions have entered. As there are actually nineteen scratch events on the programme, it should -be one o£ the finest sports entertainments ever staged in Auckland. . The innovation of running an aquatic meeting over metric distances is interesting, in view of the fact that the New South Wales association adopted the system for its last annual championships. The national sprint champion, Noel Crump will have to swim better than lie has done before to win the men's 10m metres. Bob Frankham, who is regarded as his chief opponent, 6warn 100 yds in fresh water at Thames last week in 50 2-oe, or 1 3-5s faster than the time in which Crump won the New Zealand title in slightly slower fresh water at Christchurch last month. It should be noted, however, that Frankham swam, and was defeated by Crump, in the national hundred. The second free-style event for senior men is the 400 metres, and in this Crump, Frankham and Reg. Thomas should stage an interesting contest. . , Equally as interesting as the men s sprint will be that for the ladies' 100 metres, chiefly because the present Dominion title-holder for 100 yds, -Mona Leydon, will have as her (principal opponent "Bobbie" Lewin, a swimmer who has not hitherto reproduced her practice times in this season's championships, except at the Auckland carnival, in which no swimmer, of class over that distance competed against her. This looks like being the hitter's last chance to win a race from the recognised champions (and it should be noted that Marie Farquhar won two races at the Dominion meeting at Christchurch), as Edna Rainey is surely the coming Auckland and New Zealand star. The North Shore girl recently swam 65 l-ss, practically unopposed, when she lowered Peggy Robertson's 1929 national intermediate record on Tuesday week. Another great tussle is bound to eventuate in the 200 metres, because Mona Leydon will go all out to'recover the laurels lost in the furlong to that improving swimmer, Nancy Ludlow, at Christchurch. All the Aucldand junior and intermediate champions who went to Palmerston North are reappearing, and sonicout of the ordinary may be expected from Edna Rainey, Alan Pascoe and Dan Shanahan.

THE WAITEMATA CLUB. FOUR ATTEMPTS ON RECORDS. At the Waitemnta Amateur Swimming nnd Life-Having Club's final carnival on Mondav night, at the Tepid Baths, there will be several attempts on -records. "Bobbie" Lewin will try to break Marie Farciuliar's 64 4-5s Dominion figures for lOOvds W. Whareaitu (Rotovual. who holds the New Zealand 100 yds backstroke title will attempt to lower (i. NewZealand time tor that event. Mar.ione Black a coming champion, will attack the national junior record set up bv D. Symons (Invercargill) for 50yds : and Alan Pnscoe is out to beat "Buster" Old's long-standing junior record (established at Auckland) for a quarter of a mile. birkenhead-northcote club. Aouatic competitions will be held at the Hinemoa Park Basin on Saturday afternoon bv the 3irkenhead and Nortlicote Amateur Swimming and Life-Saving Club. Points will be allotted for the aggregate trophies. The programme includes a breaststroke swim junior, intermediate and senior swimming races, diving competitions and exhibition polo matches.
