SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
A farewell and social was held at Blockhouse Bay hall oil Tuesday in honour of Mr. and Mrs. Rudge and daughter, on their departure to England. An attendance of 400 persona made a fully packed hall and a successful function. The masters of ceremonies were Mr. McCurdy and Mr. Brown, and an address was given by Mr. Thorn, to d'hich Mr. Rudge suitably replied. Items were rendered by Miss Doris Keith (violin solo) and songs by Mrs. Skellon and Mre. Rahana and many others. Speciality step-dancing was included.
The Kentish Association held a social evening at the Fabian Club rooms on Tuesday evening. Mr. S- Langstone presided and welcomed members and visitors. During the evening an exhibition of lantern slides of Auckland and various parts of New Zealand was shown by Mr. Nash. Dancing after supper, which was served by the committee, was held, Mr. Aspinwall supplying the music.
Miss Beryl Vant, of Pukekolie, who is to bo married shortly, was the, guest of the staff of the Pukekolie Technical High School recently, when the principal, Mr. W. F. J. Munro, presented her with a beautiful canteen of cutlery as a token of esteem. Mr. S. J. Youlden also presented Miss Vant with a "glory box" made by one of the senior pupils. Prior to this ceremony Miss Vant received from the pupils of the school a set of stainless soup spoons, and a Falcon ware rose bowl, the presentations being made by the head prefects, Elaine Crispe and P. W. Day.
Members and friends of tlie Playhouse Players' Club were entertained on Monday evening at Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Bailey's studio, Symonds Street, by Mr. J. Harvey, who lectured on the Greek drama, and read the play "The Agamemnon, 3 ' by Aeschylus, as translated into English by Gilbert Murray. Mr. J. W. Bafley, the club's producer, presided. Among those present were:—Mesdames Harvey, Z. Harper, V. Falconer, Edwardes and J. W. Bailey, Misses V. Anderson, N. Pritchard, Sykes, Harvey, H. and M. Nieper, M. Higgins, Chapman, E. Reeves, E. Pollard, L. Goldsmith, B. and G. Birch, A. Burnett, H. Robinson, Shaw, Sheffield, N. Power, Briar, Gardiner.
A reception followed at the residence of the bride's mother, the home lending itself to gay decorations. The morning room, lounge and drawing room were festooned in tones of pink, and in the ballroom was a canopy of pink, white and apple green streamers. Mrs. Wallace received the guests in a black georgette and lace pown, with black feather boa, and small hat. Mrs. White wore a gown of opalesque blue satin velvet, with hat to tone; Mrs. J. Hirst, lacquer red marocain, small headdress to tone; Mrs. J. L. 11. Kays, deep delphinium blue satin, tulle bandeau; Mrs. G. H. Wallace, mandarin satin crepe. BURTON—JENNINGS. A very quiet wedding was solemnised on Tuesday morning at Knox Presbyterian Church, Parnell, when Miss Elsie Jennings, third daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. M. Jennings, of rarnell, was married to Mr. Leonard Burton, eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Burton, of Grafton, Auckland. The church had been attractively decorated with flowers in shades of pink and blue by the girls of the Mercantile Auxiliary Club. The bride, who wore a dove grey matelaesc ensemble, relieved with white and spray of white tuber roses, was given away Dy Captain D. McCrone. Miss I. Jennings, in a frock of beige georgette, acted as bridesmaid, Mr. Aljpn Burton, brother of the bridegroom, assisting as best man. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. MacDonald Aspland.
