Protest Against Stoppage of
Compensation. BROKEN HILL TOWNSHIP. (United P.A.—Elcctrlc Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Broken Hill yesterday witnessed a general strike as a protest against the Government removal of a number of families from benefits under! the Compensation Aet. They had been receiving payments arising out of the i deaths of men from pneumoconiosis. ' All slicps and theatres were closed, but hotels remained open. There was no bread and no ice, and only a partial milk deliver} 7 . No newspaper was published. The essential services, such as lighting, water and railways, were carried on by special arrangement. At meetings of citizens the speakers included a clergyman, and resolutions were passed demanding the restoration to the affected people of the benefits j under the Act, otherwise a further stoppage would probably take place.
