SEVERE GALES.
HAVOC IN WEST AUSTRALIA. (Received 11 a.m.) PERTH, this day. The coastal towns report severe gales with unusually high tides and heavy seas. Anxiety is felt for some crcws at sea. A "willy willy" (fierce gust), struck Sharks Bay, and small pearling luggers were caught up and swept out to sea. Later a launch set out to locate them, but has not since reported. A lugger was capsized in the bay. The residents expect the tides to flood the settlement. The landing grounds in the north-west coast are flooded, and the north-western air mail service has been suspended. A hangar was destroyed at Carnarvin and an aeroplane damaged.
BY PUBLIC TENDER. CANADIAN TREASURY BILLS. OTTAWA, March 7. Dominion of Canada Treasury bills to the amount of 15,000,000 dollars were sold by public tender yesterday at what is believed to be the lowest rates of interest on record for Canadian shortterm financing. The bills were in two series. The first comprised 2,450,000 -dollars for three months at an average cost to the Government of 2.55 per cent, and the second comprised 12,550,000 dollars for eight months at an average cost of 3.12 per cent. The tenders, which were received in minimum amounts of 100,000 dollars, revealed a substantial over-subscription. Officials of the finance department are greatly pleased with this form of financing.
