fire volunteers. (From Onr Own Correspondent.) j HAMILTON, Wednesday. . Gold stars for 25 years of service were presented by the Hon. J. A. Young, Minister of Internal Affairs, at the Fire Brigades' Conference to five members of "the association, Mr. C. W. Tyler, Rangiora; Mr. J. P. Weston, Gisborne; Mr W. C. Pool, Akaroa; Mr. K. Smith, Carterton; Mr. J. D. Eager, Reefton. A resolution that Mr. A. Boon, a pastpresident of the association, should be awarded a life member's medal and certificate was carried. Papers were read as follows: J.ne Scientific Side of Fire-Fighting and Fire Prevention," Mr. F. J. Williams; The Dangers of Sodium Chlorate," Mr. J. _N. Irvine; "Tho Use of Carbon Dioxide for Extinguishing Fires,"-Mr. G. Russell, "Preparing for the Institute Examination," Mr. T. Anderson; "Ventilation as a Factor in the Prevention and Minimising of Danger at Fires," Mr. W. L. Wilson; "Outbreaks of lire, Mr. b. u. Gamble. , Votes of thanks were passed exprcssin" appreciation of the efforts of the Mavor and citizens of Hamilton, the members of the Fire Board, and the local brigade, for making the delegates visit to Hamilton an enjoyable one. A special vote of thanks was accorded to the Hon. J. A. Young for his interest in the fire brigades. The election of officers of the New Zealand Fire Brigade Officers' and Members' Institute resulted as follows:— President, Mr. C C. Warner Christchurch; vice-presidents Mr. W. L. Wilson, Auckland. Mr. C. A. Woolley, \\ ellincton, Mr. R. H. Price, Duned.n, and Mr! J. R. Wilson, Milton; secretary, Mr. T. J. Watts, Newmarket; treasurer, Mr. C. A.' Osborne, Onohunga.
