FLIER'S HOPE.
SOLO TO DOMINION. AFTER BIG AIR RACE. OSCAR GARDEN'S PLANS. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. If Oscar Garden competes in the Centenary air race, as recent advice suggests, he will certainly continue the flight to New Zealand, for it is one or his ambitions to be the first pilot to flv solo from England to New Zealand. This information was given to the "Star"' to-day by Mis. Garden, mother of the airman, who was, however, unable to confirm the report that lie would be a contestant in this greatest of all air races. Just a fortnight ago she had a brief note from her son telling her that ho was leaving Palestine for London in two days. He said lie did not know what he was going to do, but thought of selling his machine and returning to Australia. It would not surprise lier at all, she said, to hear that lie was starting In the big race. Mrs. Garden said she was sure her son would start if lie could secure the necessary backing. He was very interested in the arrangements for the race and had sent her every cutting he could find dealing with it. It was quite possible that lie might have received backing from his grandmother in Scotland.
