"TAKING A RISK."
SPECULATIVE RATEPAYERS,
MOUNT EDEN BOROUGH RATES. "They're taking a risk,"' said the Mayor of Mount. Eden. Mr. T. McNab, this morning, when referring to the. largo number of objections lodged in resjiect to the Mount Eden borough valuations. Mr. McNab said that a firm had circularised every ratepayer in the borough stating that a reduction of £1 in valuation meant a saving of 10/ in rates, and offering to appear before the Assessment, Court which sits on March 19 for a fee of 10/, provided that the valuation was reduced and no cliargc if tho valuation was sustained. "Naturally," said Mr. McNab, "there aro scores of ratepayers who intend to 'give it a go' on the offchancc of a win." Mr. McNab said that the rates were 4.2 d in the £1 and a reduction of £1 in valuation meant relief in rates to the extent of 12/0 in three years. The result, was that a larger number of objections had been received than otherwise would have been the case.
