Accused had the run of the house. The cheque book was left conveniently, and Mrs. Walcapu had taken a number of cheques. Some she destroyed, but she cashed two, benefiting to the extent of £7 in money and goods. The husband had also been employed on the same place, but disappeared. Proceedings had been instituted for a maintenance order against him.
The Magistrate: You must make certain of getting that man here next Court day. The Maintenance Officer: The police are out after him now.
"There seems to be something in accused's story that sho has a child and aged mother dependent on her, and had to steal to support them,'' said Detective Sergeant Robertson. The police were favourable to the charge being reduced to false pretences. The magistrate agreed to this, and to defer sentence until March 19, to enable the probation officer to investigate the circumstances.
