SOCIETY OF MUSICIANS.

NEW MEMBERS WELCOMED

To welcome new members and to open the new season, a reception, given by the president and council of the Auckland Society of Musicians, was held in the Overseas League rooms last evening. There war. a particularly large attendance.

In his address of welcome, Dr. S. K. Phillips, the president, gave a resume of the society's activities. In outlining the programme for tlie coining year, lie said it was a fairly extensive one, and it was hoped that the society would soon be able to secure its own rooms, which would be of considerable advantage financially. It was piQposcd to form a junior branch of the society with members ranging from 12 to 18 years of age. The death of Sir Edward Elgar, the great composer, iu England, was referred to by Dr. Phillips, who said that the death would mean a great loss to musical life in England. The programme presented during the evening was a most enjoyable one, and included the following items: "The Five Cautionary Tales" (Hilaire lie'.loc), set to music by* Liza Lelumtnn, and eung by Madame Ailccn Johns and Mr. Barry Coney; a bracket of songs, "Care Solve'' (Handel), and "My Lovely Celia," an old English folk melody, by Miss Helen l)vkes; recitation, "Yvonne," written by Miss Eileen Duggan, of Wellington, and recited by Mr. Denis Johns; pianoforte solo, "Scherzo in B Minor" (Chopin), by Miss Kathleen O'Lcary; vocal duet, "The Search" (Ilenry Ptircell), by Miss X. Joll and -Miss S. Phillips. The accompanists were Mrs. Anne Morris and Miss. Kathleen O'Learv. Competitions were held during the evening, and supper was served by members of the committee.
