SOCIAL GATHERINGS

A social evening was held on Saturday by the Auckland, branch of tho Young People's Christian Temperance Union. Miss E. Carpenter presided. Items were given by Misses L. Read and R. McGarald. A hearty welcome was given to Rev. G. Morgan, who was the speaker for the evening. He gave many incidents of his visit to the world's scout jamboree in England and on the issues towards peace. Games, competitions and supper closed a very enjoyable evening. One new member was initiated. • • • • - In honour of Miss Mina Wallace, of Fern Avenue, Epsom, Miss Etliel Tills, of Ridings Road, entertained a number of guests yesterday afternoon at bridge and mah jong. Exquisitely worked handkerchiefs, in various colours, were received by Miss Wallace. Both the lounge and living room looked attractive in tlieir many coloured cactus dahlias, the tea table decorations being in tones of pink. Miss Tills received the guests in a floral crepe de chine. Among those present were: Mrs. A. E. Watkins, Mrs. Fee, Mrs. J. Hirst, Mrs. Hartley Kaves, Mrs. Gavin Wallace, Mrs. George Wallace, Mrs. Gordon Bartleet, Mrs. W. Dunn, Misses Janet and N. Wallace, Jean Marriner, and Jean Fee. « • • • An enjoyable kitchen tea was given yesterday afternoon by Miss Joy Porter, of Victoria Avenue, Remuera, when the guest of honour was Miss Doris Cleland, whose marriage takes place in Wellington this month. The rooms were artistically arranged in tones of gold and blue flowers and thoroughly enjoyable vocal numbers were rendered by Mrs. Albert Goldwater and Miss Rose Kennedy. Miss Nonie Wright contributed some excellent elocutionary items. Miss Porter received her guests in a green and white tartan frock. Mrs. Nello Porter was in a light mulberry crepe suede; Miss Cleland wore a black georgette with cherry and white sleeves and hat to tone. Among those present I were:—Mesdames Stan Parkinson, Dud- 1 ley Chambers, Meinhokl, W. Wright, L. Swan, Lyttelton, W. McArthur, Ohlliam, Sykes, Albert Goldwater, Misses Rose Kennedy, Viva Bartleet, N. Wright, Rona McGregor and Ailsa Stevens.
