SETTLERS' PLIGHT.
SLIPS BLOCK GORGE. GREAT CRACKS ON ROADS. PAHIATUA, this day. Makuri, a. farming district 20 miles cast of Pahiatua, seems to have fared worse than any other district. The Makuri Gorge is hopelessly blocked and must remain so for a time. A gang of men has been sent to start clearing the obstructions. On the Makuri side of the Pomraroa Hill there are frequent obstructions and great cracks in the- road, some running parallel with the roadside as much af. a chain in length, and others crisscross in various directions. In some spots the road has dropped two feet. In the residence of Mr. D. H. Rutherford there were six chimneys, and it appears as if there are not two bricks left together intact. The wallpapers have been torn and cracked, and the lead floor of the bathroom has been twisted. A small creek at the back of the house went suddenly dry. Other homes, particularly those of Messrs. C. B. Tvlee and J. P. Tvlee, met with a similar fate. In Fisher's Hotel nearly every bottle was broken. Several back-country settlers were forced to evacuate their homes on the night of the 'quake, owin<r to the extensive nature of the damage. Later reports indicate that the Makuri Gorge will not be open until Thursday, necessitating a long detour.
