RELIEF WORKERS.
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT. "GRADUALLY TAKING CONTROL." 'At the regular monthly meeting of the Franklin County Council yesterday the chairman, Mr. J. N. Massey, M.P., ctated that it was being revealed that the Public Works Department was gradually taking over the control of the •unemployed men of New Zealand. More and more men were being absorbed each day by the Department for its various -works, and fewer men were becoming available for local bodies' works. TT)e result was liardly favourable when '■ considered front the ratepayers' point :"J of view, Mr. Massey said. The Frank- ™ 'lin County Council had spent considerable sums of money in providing tents and equipment for these men, and while ■ the Public Works camps were receiving more men each day, the Franklin County -camps were decreasing in size. At the time the council required 80 men ;r. to fill its camps, but they were not "'"available. and the equipment provided was unused.
