NOTES FROM TE AROHA.
LAGOON RECOMMISSIONED,
PROSPECTS OF NAHLIN.
Mr. Alex Swney has recominissioned .Lagoon, and she is a likely starter at the le Aroha meeting. As she runs well fresh it will be no surprise if she gets into the money. By Musketoon—Lag, she is bred for speed, as the dam is by General Latour from the dam of that really brilliant horse Soltano. Little fault can be found with the condition of Mungatoon, who has stood up to his racing really well and at present is very bright. Mungacre is gradually moulding into shape, but as he has been growing and furnishing may be better next year as a four-year-old. The Wardvilie owner-breeder, Mr. A. I Schaare, who at one time owned the Soult Merry Xif horse General Latour, and who in recent years has bred some thoroughbreds of merit, has a rising two-year-old colt by Speardance from a General Latour—Sunshine mare, that ho will have put through his preliminary education shortly. One of the matrons on the estate is a full sister to Master Brierly, by Musketoon—Lady Brierly. The Night Raid—Petal Dust gelding Dust Up, sent over to G. Reid from Te Awamutu, has been turned out at Mangaiti for a brief spell. He is quite sound in wind and limb, but he is being given the opportunity to freshen up before being put through a solid preparation. Since being turned out at his owner's Te Aroha West property, Nahlin, by rc ' l » who belongs to •r/ ,V Hines, has developed on the right lines. He is expected to make a good three-year-old, as he has winning families on both sides of his pedigree. Record Flight has been on the easy list for the past few days. Ho is nominated for hack events at the Te Aroha meeting, but if he starts is not likely to be so spiritedly backed as he has been of late. If properly placed it is quite on the cards that he will make good when really seasoned. Val Watch, in consequence of having I been placed on the schooling list, lias been entered for hurdle races at the Te Aroha fixture. It depends upon whether she settles down sufficiently while in the hands of L. Goodyear, and whether she shows any aptitude for clearing the obstacles. The performance of Unoco at Matamata was more meritorious than appeared to onlookers, as for some weeks past he had not been jumped, as the going was on the hard side. Now the sting is out of the ground he can get through some schooling, and being a game one, should run accordingly. Don't Lap, who had been running with at least an element of bad luck, made good at Rotorua in the High-weight, and. incidentally, proved that Mallowes can get his charges well. This mentor is putting King's Archer through a steady preparation in view of competing at the To Aroha meeting. N. J. Prentcr is increasing his team at Paeroa. He has Gay Egypt coming on nicely since his front teeth, injured at Ellerslie, were attended to. Other inmates of the stable arc Waitaka, Royal Gallant, a gelding by Acre, and a Speardance juvenile.
A BRILLIANT JUVENILE. Dismiss showed brilliant speed to win the Hopeful Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday. Though burdened with 9.9' he was never far from the front, and he shook off Cup Bearer when the straight was reached. Marcus Cicero got within a head of him at the winning post, but only because Dismiss was allowed to take things too easily. After the race, his rider, P. W. Powell, was censured by the judicial committee for careless riding. But for being affected in the wind, Dismiss would have looked a great prospect for next season, but the weakness is likely_ to restrict his racing career, so his trainer is adopting the wise policy of getting as much -as he can. with the gelding .before the trouble becomes more serious.; - « <
