HORSES AT MATAMATA.

SPELL FOR POUtfD STERLING. GRAND CITY GOING WELL. PRINCE VAL AND WOODFUL. Prince Yal, who liad two starts at the Matamata meeting, look no ill effects from his racing there. He was not entered for Te Aroha, his owner, Mf. J. Clothier, having designs on the Wellington meeting next month. If taken south Prince Val will be accompanied by Woodful, who disL appointed at the local meeting but usually races well at the southern centre. Royal Dance, in the same stable as Prince Val and Woodful, has recovered from his ailment, and is in work. This gelding is not being hurried, but will probably be given a start at the next meeting at Te Rapa. Good March is the name granted for a ge ding by Speardance—Lady March (a lull sister to the good mare (,Jueeu March), and Gay Dance for a filly by Speardance —Lruba. • These are both owned by Mr. •L -Clothier. Eruba is the dam of V\ oodful. Her dam was.obscure until Mr. Clothier ascertained that she is out of Did it Did was the dam of two really good performers, Sedition and Gloy. Among the horses handicapped for the YVaitoa Handicap on the first day at Te Aroha is Poi Dance, owned and trained at Matamata. Poi Dance won the Trial Stakes at Stratford at New Year, which was worth £75 to the winner. As the Te Aroha race is tor horses that have not won a race to the value of £75 or over to the winner I'oi Dance is not eligible. Hikutaia,-who ricked a muscle in a race at New Plymouth at Christmas, is worknig again This is a promising sort under <J. Cathros care, who has only liad two starts. Pound Sterling, who has raced consistently but unluckily this season, was very sore on the second day at Rotorua after scoring his initial success on Saturday. It has been decided to spell The Ace gelding, and present intentions are that he will not race again this season. R- Martin lias Grand City looking very well and doing satisfactory work on the track, with the view to raeinsr at Te Aroha. He will .be -meeting some smart hacks there, but the best has not yet been seen of Grand City, who has not had much racing. Gigantic had a race at Rotorua. and went well with his big weight, considering he is not yet at his best. W. Hennessy did not nominate for Te Aroha, but has hopes of taking his charge to Pukekohe. Valueless failed when well supported by local patrons at Rotorua on Monday. It is difficult to get a line on this horse, as he is not a good track worker. It was thought he would relish the softer going but was done wth a couple of furlongs from home. It is evident Valueless is not the horse lie was. He has not won a race since Alan McDonald got him home in a W n-u Cr a ' Wellington last winter. Ihe second of Speardance's progeny to win a race was First Dance, who is owned his ris trainer. R. J. Matecr. First Dance has been given plenty of time, and is not yet thoroughly attuned. He looks as though he will turn out decidedly useful. He was purchased from his breeder Air J. lohlen, who races Poi Dance, and who imported the sire from Australia.
