STATE OR FEDERAL?
RAILWAY WORKERS' CONTROL. SYDNEY, February 2. The Commonwealth Arbitration Court has granted the application of the New South Wales and South Australian railway authorities for a compulsory conference to consider a proposal to bring all transport workers under Federal jurisdiction. Chappie, secretary of the Australian Railways Union, x stated today that a mass meeting will be held and the question whether direct action shall be taken will depend upon the temper of the employees. Their present mood, lie added, is bitter and resentful, as the accumulative decrease in salaries and wages in the past live years totals more than £12,000,000. Now the men who are. under State awards are threatened with the loss of the 44-hour week.
