MR. ALFRED J. EMERY.
A resident of Auckland who was keenly interested in athletic sports, Mr. Alfred Joseph Emery, died in a private hospital, aged 41 years. Born in Queensland he went with his parents to West Australia when quite young. At the age of 18 he came to Auckland and joined the staff of Smith and Caughey, Ltd., where he was employed as accountant at the time of his death. For over In years Mr. Emery was an active member of St. George's Rowing Club, and on numerous occasions was stroke of winning crews. He was also for several years treasurer of the club, and in 1920-21 held the office of captain. He was closely associated with the Grafton Football Club, and for many years was selector for the senior grade. In later years Mr. Emery took up tennis and was a member of the Mount Eoskill Club, being president last year. During the Great War he served for three years with the rank of sergeant. The esteem in which Mr. Emery was held was shown by the very large attendance at the service at Hillsboro' Cemetery, and by the large number of floral tributes. Mr. Emery is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Marjorie Curtis, and a young son. His father, one brother and three sisters all reside in West Australia.
