JANUARY REVENUE.
INCREASE ON LAST YEAR.
OVEK £52,000 FROM SALES TAX
Customs returns at Auckland last month, £234,935, was £03,260 greater than in January, 1933. A comparison of the figures for the first ten months of the financial year ulso reveals a substantial increase. From April last year to the end of January this year £1,956,683 hae been collected, an increase of £310,851 over the figure for the same period last year. Petrol duty and tyre tax yielded a considerably greater return than did the same imports in January la.=t year. Laet month the total from those levies was £53,205, as against £45,442. The calculation for the motor spirit tax is made on the old rate of 6d a gallon for the purposes of comparison, the additional tax being accounted for in the Cuctoms revenue. Comparison of Returns. Last month returned the greatest yield for any one month from tile sales tax since it was introduced in February, 1933. The April figure for last year covers the period from the date of imposition to the end of the April month. The amount for the year should exceed £500,000. INCREASES AT ALL PORTS.
Wellington.—Customs revenue collected at Wellington continues to show an increase over the corresponding month of the previous year, January being the fourth consecutive month to show this increase. The total collected last month is also by far the largest for the past two years. The Customs yield was £194,707, against £182,059 in January, 1933, an increase of £14,648. Motor spirit duty yielded £72,553, against £59.007. an increase ' of £13,576; tyro tax, £1827, against £161S, an increase of £209; and beer excise, £5213, against £5714, a decrease of £501. The total sales tax collected was £57,097.
Christchurch. —The revenue collected during January by the Customs Department showed marked increases as compared with January last year. Following are details, figures for January, 1933, being given in parentheses:—Customs. £81,873 (£70.131); beer duty. £7133 (£6815); petrol tax. £23,471 (£18,896); tyre duty, £885 (£794). The sales tax yielded £26,670.
Dunedin.—Customs returns for January were £61,095, against £57,099 in January last year; beer duty, £27.087 (£23,420); tyre tax, £778 (£741); and petrol tax, £15,523 (£1(5.030). The sales tax amounted to £23,982.
