GOLD GALORE!

The Rand goldfield in South Africa has for the past 4o years been the most productive goldfield in the world or known to history. The geologists of the New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research have reported, vide the "Star" of January 23, their discovery by geophysical methods, in the Manuherikia Valley, Central Otago, of "600 square miles ofi auriferous formation similar to the Band, the greater proportion being underlayered with gold-bearing quartz," which these geologists "believe will surpass the Rand in its gold returns." On occasions the geological surveyors have tested mineral deposits by sinking shafts, driving or by boring; why has this not been done- to justify that remarkable report? Especially as such verification could be carried out comparatively inexpensively with Mines Department drills, which are hired out for such purposes. The geologists state that the "gold-bearing quartz formation" occurs in places at the comparatively shallow depth of 200 feet. Until this test is made, is net the public justified in withholding its congratulations ? FRANK REED, M.lnst.M.M. (Lond.).
