SENIOR FOURS EVENT,

AUCKLAND CLUB'S VICTORY.

The early stages of the Hamilton Regatta held on the Waikato River yesterday were marred by adverse weather conditions. Thick misty rain set in early and by eleven o'clock when the excursion trains arrived crowded with visitors, the prospects looked anything but encouraging. Just after noon the wind changed and the spectators flocked to the river banks, but the attendance was below that of previous years. The racing throughout was the best seen during the last 14 years, and never has a full programme been so closely contested.

The Auckland Club's senior fours retained the provincial championship title, defeating Hamilton by four) lengths. In the youths' race St. George's and Hamilton rowed a dead-heat, and the maiden double sculls went to St. George's by a margin of eix inches, while Hamilton beat St. George's in the eights for the Somerville Shield by two feet. The clubs' share in the winning donations were: Hamilton £35, Auckland £10, Tauranga £15, St. George's £12, West End £11, Waitemata £5, Ngaruawahia £3. Results: —

Junior Fours, li Miles.—Hamilton 1, . Tauranga 2, St. George's 3. Won by two lengths. The winners jumped out at tlie start and led throughout, although Tauranga came fast at the linlsh. Maiden Fours, 10 stone and under, one m ile.—west End 1, Ngaruawahia 2, Hamilton (No 1) 3. Won by two lengths, but the remaining eight crews were bunched and provided a most spectacular finish. Maiden Double Sculls, One Mile.—fat. George's 1, Ngaruawahia 2, Tauranga 3. iWon by six inches. A gruelling finish, Ngaruawahia pressing hard in the final stages. . _~. _ Single Sculls Handicap, One Mile—R. B. Smith (Waitemata), scr, 1: J. H. Plummer (Tauranga), 255, 2; D. Hare (Hamilton), 18s, 3. Won by 3ft. A most exciting finish, as the scratch man came through fast to gain victory in the last 8 Tfouthß' Fours, One Mile.—St. George's and Hamilton, dead-heat, 1; West End, 3. Hamilton led until the last hundred yards when St. George's challenged strongly to the line and the judges were unable to separate the crews. Senior Fours. Two Miles, A.R.A, Championship.—Auckland 1, Hamilton 2, St. George's 3. Won by four lengths. Auckland took the lead from the start and with some distance covered Hamilton started to close on the leaders. Getting Auckland's wash, Pope, the Hamilton stroke, caught a crab and the crew stopped. Auckland opened a gap and although Hamilton challenged strongly over the last stretch they could not catch the title holders. Veterans' Race.—Waitemata defeated Hamilton by a canvas. Maiden Fours, Open, One Mile.—Hamilton (No. 1) 1, Auckland 2, Tauranga 3. Won by. 11 lengths. Eight Oar Race (Somerville Shield), Two Miles.—Hamilton 1, St. George 2. St. George's held a slight lead until the last hundred yards. It was then a neck and neck struggle, but Hamilton forged ahead to win by two feet. Maiden Pairs, One Mile.—Tauranga 1, Hamilton 2, Waitemata 3. Tauranga led throughout to gain the biggest win of the day by eight lengths. Junior Pairs, 1J Miles. —Tauranga 1, West End 2, Waitemata 3. Won by threequarters of a length.

AMBULANCE COMPETITIONS. The results of the St John Ambulance competitions were: — Efficiency Cup.—Private C. Lawn (Taumarunul) 1, L. Mandeno (Pukemior) 2, P. Mitchell (Hamilton), 3.
