MUCH IMPROVED.
THAMES RATE PAYMENTS. REDUCTION ANTICIPATED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. The collection of borough rates and arrears oft rates to date shows a decided increase over the corresponding figures last year, according to a statement made by the borough commissioner, Mr. C. L. Grange, yesterday. The commissioner last year instituted a system of paying monthly instalments, which proved very acceptable to the ratepayers. The current rates collected to date amount to £2992, as. compared with £1975 at this time last year. The arrears paid so far amount to £3G92, as against £3302 for a similar period in 1933. In view of the recent reduction in the harbour rate and the promise of the commissioner that in the event of a satisfactory response by ratepayers during the current financial year he would be in a position to effect a reduction in the borough rate for 1934-35, there is every prospect of the promised relief being realised. All depends on the satisfactory payment of rates to date being sustained until March, when the statutory penalty must be added.
