DOMINION'S ATTRACTIONS. INTEREST OF AMERICANS. The Dominion is a country that can be honestly recommended to the Amencan people as a place for an ideal noliday, according to Mr. J. E. Ryan, of San Francisco, general manager for the Oceanic Steamship Company, who returned to Auckland last night after a 10 days' motor trip through the Island. "It is a fallacy to suppose that all Americans demand the height of luxury, said Mr. Ryan in expressing his satisfaction with New Zealand's hotel accommodation. "The great majority of them are accustomed to the same standard of comforts as that of your tourist hotels. Considering the population of the country and the present volutre of tourist traffic, New Zealand hotels are quite reasonably up-to-date." Moreover, he had found the roads very good, and he felt sure that those who were in charge would keep pace with the country's needs in that respect. Even without seeing the South Island, Mr. Ryan said he was convinced that New Zealand had attractions to suit Americans of all tastes. She had much to offer the sportsman, and for the sightseer there was a wonderful variety of scenery and climate. On the experience gained already it was certain that the American tourist traffic, when properly developed, would cover at least seven months of the year, probably reaching its peak in winter. That might seem strange, but the explanation was simple. American tourists coming to New Zealand might be divided into two classes, well-to-do people coming south to escape the winter, and people of smaller means spending a summer holiday of six weeks or more. The latter class tended to be the larger. How the American tourist traffic developed would depend largely on how the people of New Zealand played their part. If Americans felt happy and at home here they would come in larger and larger numbers.
