WOMAN KILLED.
STRUCK BY CAR. UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES. KNOCKED DOWN ON FOOTPATH (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORNE, Sunday. An accident in the centre of the town j yesterday afternoon resulted in the J death of a woman, Mrs. Elizabeth Pitcher, aged 02 years, who was knocked down by a motor car on the footpath in Main Street. Recently the Borough Council instituted the* parking of motor cars at an angle 111 Main Street, and at about five o'clock last evening, when tiie footpaths were crowded with people shopping, a motorist, Mr. Walter Robert Neilson, who had parked his car, made an attempt to leave. A bicycle was leaning against a verandah post 2ft from the front of Mr. Neilson's car.
Main Street slopes rather sharply to the footpath, and when Mr. Neilson took the brakes off the ear to back it out, the vehicle slid forward. Mr. Neilson jammed his foot down hard 011 the brake, but his foot slipped off the brake and 011 to the accelerator. The car bounded forward, struck the bicycle, and carried away the verandah post, against which it was leaning. Then it mounted the footpath, Mrs. Pitcher being knocked down. She was taken to hospital, but died two minutes after she was admitted. At an inquest to-day a verdict was returned of death as the result of injuries received through being struck by a motor car. Deceased had resided at Gisborne for 60 years. She is survided by her husband and an adult family of one daughter and six sons, three of whom reside at Westport.
