OBITUARY.

MRS. E. BARR. The death occurred on January 10 of Mrs. Eliza Barr at Huia, where she had been a highly respected resident for 65 years. Mrs. Barr was born at Horeke, Bay of Islands,. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Woodward, of Onehunga, her father being a soldier of the 58th regiment. Mrs. Barr is survived by seven daughters and two sons, and 41 grandchildren. Her husband, the late Mr. Thomas Barr, died a year ago. LATE MR. JAMES LOCKIE. A tribute was paid to the life work and character of the late Mr. James Lockie, who died a week ago in his eighty-first year, at the memorial service at the Northeote Presbyterian Church last evening. The Rev. F. A. Thompson referred to the adversity encountered by him in his boyhood, and his readiness to undertake seemingly impossible tasks. The grit and spirit which characterised his earlier days attracted the admiration and friendship of those who were able to assist him with his education, and by diligent application and perseverance he fitted himself for positions of increasing responsibility. Always public spirited, he placed his time and talent at the disposal of the community and of organisations which made for the brotherhood of man. In the church, lie reached the highest office—that of ruling elder. MR. THOMAS HENRY SHOVE. Another old Aucklander, Mr. Thomas Henry Shove, of Papakura, has died aged 74 years. He was born in Hobson Street in 1860, and was connected with the butchering business all his life. Mr. Shove was an enthusiastic follower of all sports. He played cricket as a member of the old United Club, and took an active part in coursing. He was a great horseman, and motor cars did not appeal to him. In his young days he owned a racehorse named Sunshine. Mr. Shove, who at one time was a cornet phiyor in the old Artillery Band, under Bandmaster A. Hunter, spent about fifteen years in Melbourne. Hia father came out in 1854 in the ship Bank of England, and his mother with the Waipu settlers from Nova Scotia in 1855 in the Margaret. Mr. T. H. Shove was married to Miss Jessie Palmer, of West Tamaki, by the late Rev. Thos. Spurgeon, and the couple celebrated their golden wedding last July. Mr. Shove lent a hand in local affairs, helping in a quiet, practical way in many acts of charity. When interested' in coursing Mr. Shove once had a remarkable experience with a clog named Sylvia, a run-ner-up for the New Zealand Waterloo. The dog was stolen and some years afterwards, when he was walking down Collins Street, Melbourne, he saw a man leading the dog. He at once accosted the man, and found that he had come by the dog in a proper manner. Upon hearing the New Zealander's story he at once passed the dog over to tho over-joyed Aucklander. Mr. Shove leaves a widow, a son. Mr. W. H. Shove, of Papakura, and a daughter. Mrs. James Murray, of Manurewa. Mr. Shove was a past-master of Lodge Papakura, No. 56. MR. THOMAS KING. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Sunday. The death occurred yesterday of Mr. Thomas King, a former senior sergeant in the New Zealand police force, which he joined at Wellington in 1878. During tho greater part of his service Mr. King was stationed at different places in Otago, and for some years before his retirement in 1017, he was senior sergeant at Tiniaru. Following his retirement, Mr. King lived at Christchurch until 1923, when he moved to Dunedin, where he remained until his death. He is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.
