TAKEN OFF STEAMER.
ARREST AT WELLINGTON. MAINTENANCE CHARGE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. Arrested on the Monowai yesterday afternoon just before her departure for Sydney, Robert Harold Court, manufacturers' representative, was charged in the Police Court to-day with attempting to leave New Zealand with the intention of failing to make adequate provision for the maintenance of his wife and children. In asking for a remand the police said the arrest was made following upon the receipt of a telegram from the Auckland police to the effect that a warrant had been issued for Court's arrest. Mr. Mazengarb, who appeared for accused, objected to the remand to Auckland. He said Court had done all in his power to answer complaints for maintenance and complete evidence had been taken here on Tuesday to be forwarded to Auckland. The present proceedings had been issued in spite of and in abuse of the Magistrate's Court procedure for, said Mr. Mazengarb, Court's wife was in a better financial position than he was. Court was in business in Australia and New Zealand, and his departure was to be in the ordinary course of business and would be known to his wife. Counsel asked that Court should be remanded to appear in Wellington next week so that communications might be sent to Auckland to put the matter on a proper footing. Mr. W. F. Stilwcll, S.M., said he thought it reasonable to give the solicitors for defendant an opportunity to got in touch vith Auckland and a remand would be made until Thursday. Bail was granted in the sum of £100 with two sureties of £50 each.
