RETRIAL EFFORT.

NURSE CAVELL'S BETRAYAL.

PARIS, January 4,

A Frenchman named George Gaston Quien,- who was sentenced to death in 1918 and was alleged to have been principally responsible for Nurse Cavell's betrayal to the Germans, has been informed that plans to secure a new trial have been abandoned, and that ho must serve tile term of 20 years' imprisonment imposed after a review of the case. Quien's sentence will expire in 1938. He is described as a model prisoner, but ho has never ceased to protest his innocence. Lawyers hitherto have frequently considered the question of securing a retrial for him.
