(United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright)
(Received 15.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 4. Following out an order by the newly-inaugurated Mayor of New York, Mr. La Guardia, to clean up the city, the police staged one of the biggest "round-ups" of recent years last night and to-daj 7 . They invaded "speakeasies" and gang "hideouts," and arrested 143 persons, 18 of whom are known to be habitual criminals or have been fugitives for lengthy periods. The precincts of the station houses wero crowded. Those facing serious charges were brought to central headquarters for questioning by new officials. Detectives and patrolmen denied that they had been given orders to make the arrests, but felt that under the new Administration they could arrest anyone violating the law without fear of political reprisal.
