LADY MELCHETT'S PORTRAIT.
Mr. Augustus John is back in London after his Italian holiday, if holiday indeed it can be called. Part of the time he spent at Venice he was painting the portrait of Lady Melchett, and most of his leisure moments he devoted to a study of the old masters. Lady Melchett's portrait, which everyone hopes will figure in next year's Academy, should be a notable addition to the long list of magnificent canvasses that John has painted. He is very far from being one of those society painters who will accept 'any sitter for his canvas, but Lady Melchett's face is full of character—the sort of face that irresistibly provokes a second olance. Mr. John is not returning immediately to his studio in "Chelsea, but is having a brief holiday first at his delightful old fciice,- Fry-ern Court, near Salisbi—y.
