PROVINCIAL NEWS.
MATAMATA. A farewell dance was tendered to Miss Jessie Finlay in the Okoroire Hall by the Okoroire school committee and the Ladies' Basketball Club. There was a large attendance of parents and friends. Dancing was indulged in till suppertime, when Mr. N. L. Higginson, president of the Basketball Club, on behalf of members, presented Miss Finlay with a liandsomely-bound book of poems. Iu a suitable speech Mr. Higginson congratulated Miss Finlay 011 her promotion to a larger school at Hawera, and expressed the regret of residents at her departure. GISBORNE. Mrs. K. M. Palgrave, Palmerston Road, left last week-end for Wellington, where •she is the guest of her sister, Mrs. Malcolm Ross. Misses Ivy and Frances Hunt left on Tuesday on a holiday visit to Marton, where they are the guests of Mrs. Fuller-ton-Smith. Mrs. F. Osmond, Waingake, is spending a holiday with her sister, Miss Lucas, Nelson. * Mrs. Bradley-Smith and Miss B. BradIcy, Harris Street, are holidaying in Palmerston North. Mr. a.id Mrs. Lawson Field have returned to Waimata Vnlley after a short stay at Wainui Beach. Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Coop, Muriwai, are visiting Morere. Miss Anne Gaddum, Waingake, is visiting Tokomaru Bay. Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Falkner returned from Wainui Beach to their home at Rere on Saturday. Miss W. Cook, Mount Eden, Auckland, is spending a holiday in Gisborne as the guest of Mrs. D. G. Robertson, Russell Street. Misses Ailsa Slight and Betty Findlay are spending a holiday in Napier. Mr. and Mrs. M. K. Boon, Whittaker Street, are visiting Christchurch. Mrs. C. H. Seymour, Pouawa, is visiting Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Chrisp, Stout Street, accompanied by their family, left this week for Wainui Beach, where they have taken a cottage for the duration of their holiday. Miss N. Black, Greymouth, is the jjucst of Mrs. Hutton, The Rectory, School Road. Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Muir, Fitzlierbert Street, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lawson Field, Waimata Valley, for the New Year holidays. Miss K. Drummond, Hawke's Bay, is the guest of Mrs. H. B. Drummond, Aberdeen Road. Mrs. G. J. Robertson, Clifford Street, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Paltridge, Vogel Street. \ Miss June Adair is the the guest of Mrs. D. G. Mac Donald, Tolaga Bay. Miss Rosemary Rees, who has been visiting friends and relatives in Gisborne for the past six months, was the guest of her niece, Mrs. A. L. Singer, Ballance Street, for a few days last week prior to her departure from Gisborne on Sunday last for Wairoa. Miss Rees stayed there with her niece, Mrs. H. D. de La tour, until Wednesday, when she left for Port Chalmers, whence she returns to London by the Tainui at the end of tlic week. Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Bright, Harongo Road, returned from Auckland on Tuesday night. TIRAU. At the last meeting of the Tirau women's division of the Farmers' Union, two new members were enrolled. The secretary of the Institute for the Blind, Auckland, acknowledged the receipt of £3 16/, the proceeds from the sale of baskets by the branch. The president announced that the rest room would probably be finished in time for the February meeting, and that she had ordered a table and chairs for the meeting room. It was decided to ask each member to present a cup and saucer. A competition for the best newspaper cutting was won by Mrs. Evans. The remainder of the afternoon was devoted to a bring-and-buy fair, mostly of garden produce. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Stewart, Withers, Pankerd and Watkins.
