MINE EXPLOSION.

Death Roll of 131 in Czech

Disaster.

FIRE DEFEATS RESCUERS. (Received 3 p.m.) PRAGUE, January 4. About 20 bodies have been recovered, and with the abandonment of rescue work a death roll of 131 has been posted as a result of the explosion and subsequent fire at Dux, at the entrance to four separate mines, which are connected by underground shafts. The .explosion shook the houses in the region, and five people were injured when one building collapsed. Firedamp was the cause of the disaster, which is the worst in Czechoslovakia for many years. Fire followed the explosion, 'which destroyed the lift shafts, thus cutting off the escape of the victims. One squad of rescuers got into the pit by means of a ventilating shaft,«and 16 bodies were recovered, but the fire then forced the withdrawal of the rescuers.
