Epigram Fails in Close Race For the Goodwood. Epigram was made favourite for the Goodwood Handicap, in which Sunny Sky was tile only defection. There was also good support for Chief Cook and Pomp, and the last-named won in a close finish. Karangapai was in front when the field settled down, and he led along the back from L'AUegro, Epigram, King's Archer, Pomp and Baroscope. Pomp lost his position a little farther on, and across the top Karangapai was still the leader,' being followed by Epigram, King's Archer, Alpinus, Moonfleet, Allegretto, and Baroscope. The order into the straight was Karangapai, L'AUegro, Epigram, Alpinus. King's Archer, Allegretto, Pomp and Chief Cook. In the run home Pomp camo through, and in a great finish beat Karangapai by a neck, with Epigram, who bored out badly, a neck away. King's Archer was next, and then followed Jalldy Karo, L'AUegro, Baroscope, and Lady Spy.

All the Way. Eight lined up for the Sylvia Handicap, Burnish being favourite, and the Pombal filly led all the way to score a hollow win by five lengths. She is owned by Mr. G. M. Currie, who won the first race with Pomp. Burnish was first out from the barrier, and was soon clear of Bodyline, Sporting Blood, Gallant Knight, Eara, Xun Nicer, Royal Appellant, and Pound Sterling, that being the order across the top. There was no alteration as the field turned for home, and Burnish went on to win easily by five lengths from. Sporting Blood, with Royal Appellant threequarters of a length away. Bodyline, Eara, Nun Nicer, Pound Sterling, and Gallant Knight followed. Kiltowyn Again. All went to the post for the Grandstand Handicap, Kiltowyn, who won the Summer Cup on the second day, being made favourite and he won, but only after a desperate finish with Master Brierly. Amnion Ra led past the stand from Prolyxo, Whakapara, Kiltowyn and Cricket Bat. Along the back Ammon Ra and Prolyxo led Eager Rose, Kiltowynj Cricket * Bat. Whakapara, Lord "Val, Mungatoon, with Shatter well back at the tail of the field. Across the top Prolyxo, Eager Rose, Master Brierly, Kiltowyn and Cricket Bat was the order. Prolyxo and Kiltowyn were first into the straight from Eager Rose and Master Brierly, with Shatter, Cricket Bat and Master 'Norval next. In a great battle between Kiltowyn and Master Brierly Kiltowyn got the verdict by a head, with Lord Val a length and a half away. Cricket Bat was fourth, followed by Mungatoon, Master Norval, King March, Shatter and Southdown, with Ammon Ra last.

A Runaway Victory. Mia Stella scored his second win at the meeting when he beat his nine opponents pointless in the Auckland Hurdles. The favourite was Snow Prince. The first fence brought down Free Air, and then Mia Stella took charge to carry on the running. Passing the stand Mia Stella was well clear of Snow Prince, with Cruachan, Patutahi, Solanio, Tatvoon, Zane Grey and • Biform, with Billy Boy a long way back last. Along the back Mia Stella increased his lead from Snow Prince, the order being unchanged, and when the straight was reached Mia Stella was six lengths in front of Snow Prince, with Patutahi about 10 lengths away.
