AT THE MARTS.
SHORT HOLIDAY SALE. DEMAND FOR DESSERT FRUIT, HEAVY POTATO SUPPLIES. A short sale of fruit and vegetables was held at the markets this morning to meet the holiday demand, but there was no sale of poultry. Fruit was not plentiful. In the absence of Canadian apples, local cookers sold well, while there was a brisk demand for good quality dessert peaches and plums. Fruit. —Apples: Local cooking, 4/ to 0/ case. Peaches: 3/6 to 0/3. Strawberries: Captain Cook, Od to 1/0% per chip; Marguerite, 7d to lid. Plums: 2/ to 5/6. Oranges: Australian Valencia, 21/ to 30/ case: California]! Navels, 30/ to 35/. Lemons: 5/ to 0/. Tomatoes: Hothouse, 4d to 8d lb; outdoor,. 3d to Od lb. Bananas: 20/ to 26/6 case. Grapes: Hothouse, 2/ lb.
No cabbages or cauliflowers were offered in the vegetable market, but there was a fair demand for other vegetables. Potatoes were in heavy supply, and prices receded slightly. Vegetables.—Potatoes, 4/ to 3/6 bag; onions, 3/ bag; kumaras, Island, 12/ to 14/ cwt; pumpkins, new season, 8d to 1/3 each; cucumbers, 1/0 to 3/ dozen; carrots, Od to 1/ dozen; parsnips, 1/ to 1/6 dozen; beet, 6d to 9d dozen; spinach, 8d to 1/ dozen; green peas, 2/ to 3/6 bag; French beans, 1/6 to 4/ bag; marrows, 1/ to 1/6 dozen; lettuce, 2/ to 3/6 case; rhubarb, Od to 2/ dozen. Eggs are selling at last week's rates. Quotations are:—First grade hen eggs, OVid dozen; B grade, B%d, and C grade 7%d. First grade duck eggs, S'Ad; B grade, 7Mid; and C grade, 6V£d dozen.
