ASSISTANTS' AWARD.
AMENDMENTS BY COURT. EFFECTIVE ON JANUARY 8
A number of amendments have been made by the Arbitration Court to the grocers' assistants' award, particularly with reference to branch managers or assistants in charge, and overtime. The amendments will take effect from January 8. It is provided that a branch manager or an assistant in charge shall be paid a minimum wage of £5 a week, and similar employees whose ages and service would not entitle them to the fu'.l minimum wage for an assistant shall receive a minimum of £4 15/ weekly. All time worked in excess of the specified hours shall be considered overtime, and all overtime exceeding 12 hours in any quarterly period shall be paid for at the rate of 3/0 an hour. Provision is made for the keeping of a record of all overtime. A branch manager or assistant in charge shall be entitled to an annual holiday of two weeks in lieu of the holiday of one week provided in the award, with a proportionate allowance as provided for assistants. Apart from the amendments quoted, nothing in the award shall apply to branch managers or assistants in charge. Casual branch managers or assistants in charge, whose employment is for not more than six consecutive days, shall be paid the minimum wages quoted, but shall receive payment for overtime in accordance with the award, to which they shall be subject in other respects.
