Eggs are cheaper this Christmas than| for theiast 40 years. ._ This., is due to heavy supplies'having been sent in,' probably in the expectation of higher prices, owing to tlie demand for the Christmas trade. To prevent stocks accumulating, the price was dropped this morning to lOd per dozen for first grade lien eggs, and 9d per dozen for duck eggs. One Christmas many years, ago hen eggs sold as high as 4/3 per dozen. Local soft fruits are in good supply, plums increasing in both quantity and quality. Strawberries have not been in such good supply this week. Cherries and apricots are coming forward in fair quantities. Local new season's apples, still green, are being sent in, but of course are only fit for cooking. A few new season's figs are on sale. Supplies of vegetables have been very heavy this week, and on the average prices are low. Lettuce is almost a glut on the market, and green peas arc unusually plentiful. Cucumbers are in heavy supply, and new season's onions are being now sent in freely. Quotations are: — Eggs. Fresh hen eggs, lOd per dozen; duck eggs, 9d per dozen. Bacon and Hams.
