UPPER HARBOUR NEWS.
(From the "Star" Correspondent.) Some months ago fire swept away the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Sinton, of Whenuapai. Settlers then organised concerts, etc., to raise funds to assist in the erection of new buildings and these were opened on Saturday evening with an oldfashioned "house warming." Visitors came from all surrounding settlements on both sides of the harbour and a number came even from the city. About 140 took part in what was described as the happiest and largest private gathering yet held in this district. Anticipating a large attendance, the partitions had not been erected, so'tliat all visitors were comfortably accommodated. Dancing, card playing and elocutionary and musical items were followed by the presentation of useful household articles to the host and hostess. Miss Colebrook, at the invitation of the Whenuapai branch of the Douglas Social Credit League, delivered an address on Tuesday night to an appreciative audience on the aims and objects of the movement. Mr. H. North presided. > Haymaking is proceeding generally, but the acreage is much smaller this' season. The past cold dry weather precluded heavy growth and much of last year's hay is still in stacks. Rain is badly needed for the pastures and for drinking water. The ground is drier than it has been for years at this time.
The local fishermen landed another large stingray last week, 4ft broad by sft long. The previous one, as reported in the "Star," weighed 4cwt and measured sft by 7ft.
