NIGHTWATCHMAN STRUCK.
FERRY PASSENGER FINED,
Alfred George Cox, aged 37, in the Police Court this morning, denied a charge that he assaulted George Barrett, aged 63, nightwatchman for the Devon port Ferry Company. Barrett, a tall man, aged 63, said he was at the ferry gates at 12.15 this morning when Cox got out of a taxi and rushed towards the gates. Witness told Cox that the Devonport boat had gone, and mentioned that the next sailed at 12.50. Cox then struck him on the mouth.
Barrett denied that he struck Cox first.
"Well, liow did he get the scratches which are now on his face?" asked Mr. Noble, who represented Cox. "Oh, I hit him after he struck me," said complainant. A constable said he arrested Cox, who had evidently taken a few drinks, as he was excited.
Cox, a naval petty officer, denied the assault, and stated that he was hustling the gates when 'Barrett caught hold of him and held him back. The magistrate imposed a fine of £1.
