GIRL GUIDES.

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the Dominion i Council of the Girl Guides of New Zealand was held at the home of Mrs. W. R. Wilson, chief commissioner of Girl Guides, at St. Leonard's, Takapuna, on Wednesday afternoon. A brief resume of the work accomplished at the commissioners' conference in Dunedin was given by Mrs. Wilson, who stressed the importance of the decision to move the headquarters from Auckland to Hawke's Bay, where the work would be under the supervision of Miss Ruth Herrick, dep.uty commissioner. The alteration, she explained, would not take effect for three months. The year, the report stated, had been a hard one in regard to finance, this being due to the world depression. However, in spite of difficulties, the guide shop had shown a substantial credit balance. The report further stated that there were during the past year 50 commissioners and 06 companies and packs, and 25 guiders' warrants had been issued from headquarters. t The need for competent and trustworthy leaders was stressed by Dr. Margaret Knight, Dominion head of rangers, who, in her report, said that Auckland had now 15 companies more than last year, and also 28 recruits. It was stated that all companies had entered for the Muriel Mebbitt Memorial Cup for ambulance work, this having been won by the Awhina Company. The Auckland llangers had been successful in winning the Bledisloe Cup, presented for the best nature log book, entries having been judged by Mr. Johannes Andersen. The report on brownie work stated that there was a scarcity of leaders. So many girls preferred to be captains and lieutenants rather than occupy subordir naite positions, and consequently the time had arrived when the whole of the brownie movement stood in need of assistance. It was decided that this question should be discussed at the next commissioners' conference. Mrs. R. M. Tolliurst, chairwoman of the Dominion executive, presided at the meeting, and paid high tribute to the work done by Mrs. Wilson, who had worked so hard to further the guide movement in New Zealand.
