WASHINGTON*, November 9
It was revealed to-day that food for over 16,000,000 needy persons, in addition to the jobs for 4,000,000 unemployed already promised, will be part of the Government's plan to avoid want. By the coming winter, it is estimated, the relief programme •will have cost 1,000,000,000 dollars.
Officials stated that the plan has enormous scope and is unique in character. Never before in its history has the Government of the United States undertaken to feed, clothe and iind jobs for citizens. About 3 ; 370,000 families, with an average of 4.4 persons in each, will be on the new relief rolls. Almost half of the current 500,000,000-dollar allotment has already been spent on relief. The Administrator, Mr. Hopkins, plans to buy coal, blankets and clothing, and will even pay rent for the needy. Additional camps will be opened for the transient jobless.
' Another programme, frankly called experimental, is to provide small homesteads for unemployed, which it is estimated will cost 25,000,000 dollars. Enough of such applications have already been filed to use 300,000,000 dollars.
