PALANTUA'S N.Z. CUP.

Run !n Record Time — Stewards' To Silver Streak - Pin Money Scores In Classic — Copyist Wins Linwood at Long Odds — Henry of Navarre Again.

Rocket, one of the fancied horses after the Trentham meeting, had to submit to defeat in the New Zealand Cup at Ricearton this afternoon by Palantua, who covered the distance in Australian and New Zealand record time. Silver Streak scored in the Stewards', the second leg of the Dominion's historic double. Pin Money, a well-backed candidate for the Welcome Stakes duly prevailed. Henry of Navarre, that good hurdler, was again on the winning list.

An Improved Filly.

Sweet Agnes First Home in Spring Plate. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. In the, Spring Hurdles Henry of Navarre led practically all the way, the favourites being Henry of Navarre and Manuiri.' Gallivanter nearly fell at the first hurdle, interfering with Rational 11. whose rider lost an iron and Henry of Navarre took tip the lead. At the second hurdle Kapuna fell and brought down Sports King, and Henry of Navarre continued in front and reached the back stretch six lengths ahead of Gallivanter and Manuiri, with Gold Knight, who had lost ground, next. Gold Knight was leading with Henry of Navarre at the last hurdle, but blundered badly and Henry of Navarre went on to win by three lengths from Revision, who finished strongly and beat Gallivanter by two lengths. Nightcap and Advance CampWere next. When Sports King was brought down by Kapuna falling in front of him he broke one of his forelegs and had to be destroyed. R. Beale and W. J. Pascoe, the riders, escaped serious injury. Finished Gamely. Two candidates for the New Zealand Oaks on Wednesday finished first and second in the Spring Plate. Davolo led into the straight from Sweet Agnes, Manetho and Falkland, but Davolo weakened and Sweet Agnes took sole charge. She was challenged by Gipsy Love, but fought it out gamely and won by half a length. Manetho was a similar distance away third, and Davolo was fourth. The erby candidate Falkland finished second to last. A Big Field. In a field of twenty-two the favourites for the Linwood Handicap were Emotion, Prostration and Royal Amphora. Errantry was first out, but was almost immediately knocked back and Top Rank and Dollar Prince were first into the straight from Gaysome, Royal Amphora, Prostration, Berate, Emotion, Knocklong and Copyist. There was not a great deal between the first and last of these horses, but Copyist finished very well on the outside. Top Rank tired badly, though Dollar Prince hung on well but Copyist ws too good. Copyist commenced racing only this season and has been placed in each of his six starts, winning twice. He paid an unusually large dividend to-day for one of Sir Charles Clifford's horses.

The Cup. . The Xew Zealand Cup field included no horses who had previous outstanding performances to their credit, but the race looked very open and proved a good medium for betting. It provided a fine contest and exciting finish, fought out by the two. chief fancies of the public. Eaiantua ( £582 10/ and £540) was sent out an absolute favourite from Rocket, second choice with £421 10/ and £522 10/, while Southdown ranked third fancy with £322 10/ and £399. From a good start Chrysology was first to show out and he led on to the course proper from Southdown, Tout le Monde, Brambletorn and Rocket. As they went out of the straight Chrysology drew out six lengths ahead with Southdown, Brambletorn and Tout le Monde heading the pifrsuers. The pacemaker's lead was quickly diminished racing along, the back, and Southdown took charge crossing the top and led past the half-mile post from The Smuggler, Chrysology, Brambletorn, Tout le Monde, Inflation and Minerval. The Smuggler joined Southdown at the home turn and they led into the straight from Brambletorn and Minerval, with Rocket and Palantua coming fast. Southdown had shot his bolt and The Smuggler took charge. He led at the distance from Palantua and Rocket. Both of the last-named finished well, but Palantua proved too good and won by a length from Rocket, with The Smuggler a length and a half away third. Ramo w-as only a short head away fourth, next were Brambletorn, Minerva], Southdown, Tout le Monde, Inflation. Epigram, Jaloux, Chrysology and Eminent.

Tile time, 3.22 1-5, creates a new record for two miles for Australia and Xew Zealand. The previous best was 3.22:1 by Star Stranger in the Trontham Gold Cup in March. 1928. Palantua is trained at Wingauti by F. Shaw for a lady owner, Mrs. W. Mackenzie.

Rider Censured. The stipendiary stewards considered ' alleged interference by W. H. Jones, - rider of.Palantua in the New Zealand Cup, with Ramo, ridden by A. Russell, _ about a furlong from the winning post. After hearing the evidence of the two riders the stewards reprimanded Jones for not having kept his mount under proper control. Favourite Beaten. Coronilla was sent out i. hot favourite for the x Welcome Stakes, Pin Money being second choice. Pin Money delayed the start by playing up and Coronilla was first out and entered the course proper ele. • of Bodyline, Wonderful, Brown Betty, Pin Money and Marcus Cicero. The" leader began to tire and was beaten when they reached the official stand. Pin Money then took charge and won by half a length from Variant, who finished very fast, Wonder- " fill being a neck away third, just in front of Coronilla.

\ Failure of Favourite. Some Shambles, favourite for the Apprentices Handicap let his backers down, finishing: only eighth. Silver Brier led into the straight from Bright Shade, Walton Park, Final Shot and Importance, who then took charge near ■ the distance, where Flower and High Tor also put in their claims. Importance, however, won by a neck from Flower, with High Tor a neck away third. Walton Park, High Rank and Silver Brier were bunched next.

Silver Streak Close to Record. All 12 acceptors for the Stewards' Handicap went to the post. Golden Wings was favourite, with £1098 10/ and £009 10/; Croupier carried £404 10/ and £420, and Silver Streak £331 and £430. When they had gone a furlong Golden Wings was leading from The Quorn, Croupier and Kerbside. Kerbside reached the course proper first, slightly ahead of Golden Wings, with The Quorn, Croupier, Great Star, Hurlingham, Cranford and Silver Streak next. Kerbside was beaten soon afterwards, and Golden Wings began to lose ground at the distance. Croupier and Hurlingham passed him, and Silver Streak and Guarantee came fast. Cranford disposed of Hurlingham, but he could not shake off Silver Streak, who beat him to the post by half a length. A similar distance away was Guarantee, and True Shaft was fourth. Then came Passion Fruit, Lordly Knight, Golden Wings, Hurlingham and Croupier. A. H. Eastwood rode Silver Streak, whose time was only one-fifth of a second outside the record for the race, established by Comic Song in 1920.

Win to Nightly. Eoyal Sceptre set the pace from Silvox in the Ricearton Handicap, and when they straightened up in the run home Royal Sceptre, Silvox and Nightly were the first three. Silvox then took charge and Nightly challenged him and they drew away' from the field, Nightly prevailing by half a length, with Miladi four lengths away third. The first and second horses are engaged in the Derby on Monday. The Masquerader, another Derby candidate, finished last. The Totalisator. During the day £35,940 was handled by the totalisator staff, against £28,035 for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £7305. Red Manfred's Gallop. After the last race wa run at Ricearton to-day Red Manfred was brought on to the course and given a trial gallop over a mile. He ran the first four furlongs in 49 2-ss, and completed the journey in 1.39 —a smart effort. Result 6: —■
