HIS DOUBLE CENTURY.
Gordon Richards Cheered Ity Patrons at Newmarket. Gordon Richards is the first Jockey to complete the "double century" since 1593, when Tommy Loatcs rode 222 winners, which is the nearest any English jockey has ever been to beating Fred Archer's 18S5 record of 240. There were eight seasons in which Archer rode over 200 winners, these having been 1870, 1577, 1878, 1881, 1882, 1883, 1884, and 1885. When Gordon was observed to be winning easily on Nevertheless in tho Abindon Mile Nursery at Newmarket on September 26 loud cheering broke out all along the course, and then there occurred a rush such as has never been seen at Newmarket. People ran from the stands to the paddock, intent upon greeting the champion on his return. The first to congratulate Gordon as he rode in was Lord Harewood, and upon being led into the unsaddliiip enclosure the popular little man received a splendid ovation, the members of the Jockey Club applauding in a manner to which we are not accustomed at the sedate turf headquarters. Although Nevertheless was at substantial odds in the ring, backed only for light money, the colt was well supported by totalizator patrons. Gordon"? three winners on September 20 were for Martin Hartigan's stable, a fact which gave the jockey added pleasure. He has been attached to the Ogbourne stable for just on 14 years, and has the greatest regard for the trainer who gave him his chance to become a jockey. Gordon has never entertained retainers without consulting his first master, and his delight can be well understood when he rode his 200 th winner of the scasoir on a horse owned by Mrs. llai tjgan.
