ATHLETICS.
THE AT ALANT AS. GIRLS' CARNIVAL AT BLANDFORD. To-morrow afternoon at Blandford Park there will be held the eighth annual sports carnival of the Auckland Girls' Athletic Association. In addition to running, there will be combined and physical culture events. All competitors have been practising assiduously for over ten weeks under expert coaching and, judging by the keenness displayed at the Remuera fulldress rehearsal last Saturday, to-morrow's championships should be very closely contested.
The physical training display will be under the direction of Mr. A. N. Rush, who has had 20 years' experience and has conducted displays in all the principal centres in New Zealand. _ This year he has worked out an especially attractive and spectacular display of physical exercises. Miss M. Searle, who has recently returned from abroad, where she made a special study of physical recreation, is in charge of the games _ programme. Numerous ball team events, single athletic contests and folk dancing will form a portion of the programme.
The association is run along recreational lines. There is no attempt at prolonged training, it being felt that much good is undone when undue physical and nervcius strain is introduced. This has always been the policy of the A.G.A.A., and has resulted in good team work with a certain amount of healthy friendly rivalry amongst tho various teams entered. The A.G.A A. have it all their own way this year, as the inter-house sports people are not putting on a carnival, and to-morrow .will apparently be the only opportunity for the public to see a display this year by 300 girls. The trophies to be competed for are at present held by:— Grand Challenge Cup:—Arawa Sports Club. Teams* Events (Kohn Cup).—Heards; runnerriip (Bridgen's Cup), Berlei, Ltd. jingle Events (Mr. J. W* Shearer's Cup).—Arawa Sports Club. Relay Cup (Miss A. V. Hay's)—Arawa Sports. Club. Physical Culture. (Howard Abbott CupJ.—Rovers Basketball Club. Marching (Berlei Cup).—St. Peter's. Runners-up for Drill and Marching Combined (Week's Cup).—Bycroft's and St. Peter's, equal.
SPORTS AT NORTHCOTE.
On- Saturday afternoon the combined field day. which was postponed from October 14, will be held at the Northcote Junior High School grounds. A good programme of events has been arranged, and entries have been received from most local sports clubs. Last year at a similar meeting the Calliope Harrier Club was successful in gaining the greatest aggregate points. In view, however, of the fine entries received from the local Kngby club, this organisation Is strongly fancied for to-morrow's contest, with the Gymnasium and League Clubs also prominent
