Through sodium chlorate in powder form igniting, a young, man, Eric Allison, employed on a farm near Morrinsville, sustained painful burns on his leg this week, and is an inmate of a Morrinsville private .hospital. Allison had been carrying a small quantity of the powder in a small box in his pocket, applying a little to ragwort plants on the farm. He had just returned to the homestead, when portion of his clothes ignited, apparently due to the effect of friction on the sodium chlorate cherhical. He changed his clothes unaided and was brought to Morrinsville for medical attention. Several cases of farm workers having sustained burns when using sodium chlorate on rag wort, have been reported during the past year or two, and the Department of Agriculture has issued circulars pointing out the need for exercising care in its use.
